Extrordinary - thanks for linking to that. So many steps for every tube, and so many inspection points. No wonder solid state rolled in as an economical option. Guys moving long glass tubes with bare hands! And such a detailed documentary - I feel I finally know my tubes inside out. I'll value my Mullard 12au7 Blackburns even more now.

Good stuff! I wonder what happened to those machines? Then the transistor came along. The narrator even mentions transistors etc, so they must have known the technology would change then and the expansion to reflect that.
