These days, the smartphone has virtually wiped out the market for compact, pocketable digital cameras.
However for those with a leaning towards 'serious' photography or a good moderate tele-zoom-but-compact 'travel' camera, the cellphone doesn't cut it & you don't want a costly, big DSLR or even a moderately compact 'Mirrorless' big sensor camera'.
The so-called 'serious compact' camera usually features a biggish '1-inch" sensor, which begins to approach the bigger sensor size of 'serious enthusiast' Micro-4/3 & the APS-C sensor cameras.
Using lens focal length 'crop ratios' as a measure, the 1" sensor is 2.7x, the M-4/3 is 2x & the APS-C is 1.6x lens crop ratio, compared with 'professional' Full Frame lens focal lengths.
So, you can appreciate perhaps, that 1" sensor cameras can get you some decently serious image quality, without the weight-size penalty (lens-depth mainly) of the bigger sensor cameras.
DP REVIEW looks at 3 top contenders currently:
CANON G5 X II
SONY RX100 VII
CANON G7 X III
