Hi Everyone - the above poll on what is of most interest to you on this forum, has run for around a month & has now been 'locked' (no further voting) & the results are now visible. We've had 22 members vote & thanks for participating. We would have liked to have had more member opinions, but not all members check in every month. Generally, we have 10x as many 'guests' (non-members or non-logged in members) than members visit this forums per day. Unfortunately this polling set-up does not permit non logged-in viewers to vote.

Interesting, phono is very popular at first position, digital a distant 17th! Was this particular poll a true reflection of audio in NZ?

Interesting, phono is very popular at first position, digital a distant 17th! Was this particular poll a true reflection of audio in NZ? I also was surprised how poor the response was for digital, esp. c.f. to analogue categories! (back to the future) I had a quiet chuckle that humour rates more highly than digital too. Can we assume digital is worse than a joke? Caveat as Owen notes: very low sample number overall. What would also be extremely interesting, is what non-members most value on DL. Well done Owen, a nice poll that fairly reflects activity on your/our most valuable site.

Perhaps the poll results represent the demographic of those voting ?

I'm wondering if my vote registered Owen. There was no confirmation and if I did it wrong then perhaps others did too which could explain the low numbers? I am one of those who visits often but seldom posts. I enjoy the friendly atmosphere and banter. Keep up the good work!

I did not vote as you did not include an "everything" option... yes, yes, I was sulking and being petty.
However I'm quite happy with the end result, small sample size or no!

Hi Chaps, The opinion poll has been a bit surprising in some ways & like some of you, I have been mulling it over. One should be wary to draw too many general conclusions, but: 1) As said, only 20-30 members visit on a regular basis daily - not necessarily the same 20-30, as some did not vote. This is an opinion poll that doesn't necessarily represent the majority of visitors to these forums. 2) Only 22 members voted during the 5-6 week period, for what was of MOST interest to them on this forum. 3) As you can see, of most interest to this group were: Turntables, cartridges, phono equipment. Hi-Fi & hi-fi news in general Analogue hi-fi in general. 4) Closely followed by (in descending order of popularity): Hi-Fi equipment in particular DIY hi-fi, tweaks & repairs (A surprise to me.) Music & music artists in general Think-pieces in audio & the music industry Vintage hi-fi & restoration 'Affordable' hi-fi Vinyl records, news & record care5) Of NO interest at all, were: Portable audio (Surprising, as I believe this that smaller, more portable audio is relevant to younger music enthusiasts, more compact living.) Film, TV, podcast video (Again, I'm observing that a high proportion of young people now are getting their news, useful information & entertainment, via video on demand. Social media, podcasts, Netflix, etc. I am tending to watch & subscribe a lot more to YouTube channels & the like, myself.) 6) Other: - I am surprised at the low level of interest in Headphone listening & in Digital Compact Disc.

i'm interested in both headphones and Digital compact disc, however my interest in headphones has waned as their prices and number of manufacturers and models has increased. For example a few years back there was only really AKG.Sennheiser,Beyer and Stax as top of the line manufacturers. Now theres a veritable heap of them all of them with increasingly more esoteric and expensive models. It used to be that you could pick up a really nice set of second hand phones for a few hundred $, but now to do the same and you would be in the thousands.
CD players are such a plug and play item that theres not much you can easily tweak to improve the performance so its just an exercise in consumerism really imo.

Possibly technology of products has advanced, arguably in some (but not all) hi-fi product categories. Headphones, for example, in the late 1990s, the Sennheiser HD600 was class-leading & priced at US$450 (in 1998 dollars). Now, 20 year later, Sennheiser's top HD660S open-back H/ph is priced at only ~US$500.. And, inflation has been 20% or so (in USA) over those 2 decades. However, Sennheiser's curent 'reference' HD800S has a US$2799 RRP. Is the SQ of this closed-back H/ph that much superior, if at all? I haven't heard the latter so I can't say, just thoughts. It should of course be noted that 'wealth inequality' (esp in USA I believe) has widened significantly - ie the wealthy have become significantly more so, than the rest of the population.
