for pure nostalgia I'm looking for a good playing copy of Can't Buy a Thrill. Steely Dan are a band that I have little interest in but Can't Buy a Thrill was a soundtrack to almost every part I went to for several months. Been getting a bit of earworm of late so time to get the real thing. Not so concerned about sleeve condition or release just as long as it plays nicely.

Thanks for that thought Cooks, gave mine a good thrashing when I got home from work. Great album. Shouldnt be too hard to find from your favourite 2nd hand LP vendor id have thought ? Mine is a basic NZ pressing, still sounds pretty good but im on the lookout for a nice early US pressing.

I gave away my Steely Dan albums (including CBAT, Aja, Pretzel, Gaucho), a few years ago to someone who I knew would appreciate them more than me.
Except for one of their greatest hits albums. I think it is Gold? that I have somewhere. Must find it and give it a play.

Purchased a cd copy yesterday from Amazon Japan that will tide me over until I can find a good vinyl copy. There's a few on Ebay but shipping being asked is way up there. Surprised that RG and Relics weren't listing a copy. In no rush, other things have a higher priority for now.

Rg had a US pressing listed a while back that I was tempted by, had generally ex results with their 2nd hand online stuff.

Big gash across the opening track on side two that made it unplayable. Unfortunately it was several months before I got around to checking and playing the lp and thought I might be pushing it uphill trying to claim against it.

nz copies on abc, mca are all good, shouldn't be that hard to find ? here's a rough looking one on tm www.trademe.co.nz/music-instruments/vinyl/lps-33-rpm/rock/listing-2059824601.htmbest is an early us pressing on the black abc labels, close is the more familiar abc orange label. mca re-issues were ok. for the casual dan listener the only album you need is the 1978 double album Greatest Hits. all issues sound good, including the nz mca, but it's the early us abc in textured cover, with masterdisk/robert ludwig mastering that is the holy grail.
one of the best sounding compilations ever.

Saw that one on TM earlier Michael. Not keen on buying used lps on TM.

I had that compilation, and yes it did sound good. Unfortunately was a victim of my clearout of compilation LPs purge a few years back.

ended up with the ordering that TM item as listed by Michael. RG have one but apparently has a noisy scratch on one side and I wasn't keen on paying another $20 for the one Wonderland Records has listed on TM. Not too concerned about the cover as long as the vinyl is good. Finding the Japanese cd version a little bright on some vocals so have resorted to a little eq. Not sure if the Japanese one is an unique master or using an earlier version. I suspect the latter but who knows.

maybe both ? the japanese have a penchant for pristine highs on their media. i have an early german cd which is also a tad bright.

Should have known better, one Steely Dan record is only the start, but I think two will call it quits. Yesterday ordered Pretzel Logic 2014 Japanese reissue .

why the re-issue ? there are better versions available.

why the re-issue ? there are better versions available. I like the Japanese cds with their packaging etc and they generally hold their value on the 2nd hand market once they're oop. The 2014 gets positive reviews on the Hoffman site. Not very interested in vinyl any more unless its a special case like Can't Buy a Thrill. I use the bedroom system a lot more than the speaker setup so staying with cds makes sense.

oh you ordered a cd not vinyl ? Yes, firmly in the digital camp where possible now. After 56 years shagging about with lps getting a little over all the rigmarole and expense. Looking for the easy life. Only purchased 4 lps this year, a new low for me.

So your only going to buy 2 Steely Dan albums, and one of them isnt AJA at this stage yes. I see vinyl copies of AJA in my local TW at the moment but fear the recording may be too audiophile for my heathen ears.

Again shouldnt be difficult to find a good used vinyl copy, dont know about CD but id be suprised if there isnt a reissue of it somewhere. There doesn't appear to be many recent vinyl reissues of the SD catalogue. The copies of AJA in my local Warehouse must be the 2008 Back to Black release.
