It was a lovely autumn day ....
Went to Real Groovy on Queen Street while in AK over the Easter weekend. While there I saw that Julia Jacklin's 'Don't Let the Kids Win' album is out on vinyl. JJ is a PYT (Pretty Young Thing) from Sydney and has put out a corker album. She puts a bit of angst in her voice as is fashionable nowadays but despite that a very pleasant listen. Imagine my joy in seeing the LP! It was a bout $40.00 or so but hey - some of that gets to the artist, right. Right? I get back to beautiful Napier and with squeals of Joy and Delight I show my package to my spouse, Fatty our cat, and anyone else near enough. More squeals as I open up the package and admire the the innards - the highlight of which is a vinyl of the most beautiful blue. Now by and large the LP is better when I have both LP and Digital. Adelle's 21 and some Katie Melua come to mind. What can go wrong? You wanna know? I''ll tell you. It was crap. It sounded like an mp3 recorded at 160. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Do you recall Otto (played by Kevin Kline) in A Fish Called Wanda. He opens up the safe where all the loot is stored only to find it empty. He shouts: ' DISAPPOINTED!! ' That is how I felt.
I feel let down because it seems to undo so much of the work I have done on my turntables. I have spent so much time in fine tuning them ... but for what? It is enough to drive a man to drink, or digital. What is the cause of this snafu? Is it the blue vinyl, possible I suppose. More likely it that it has only been mastered for digital and they have not spent much effort in transcribing it for vinyl.
Is there any consolation ... JJ gets a cut, right?
