On 7 Sharp tonight, Nathan Haines was interviewed. He has had a bout with cancer in the throat, but seems to be in recovery. He is planning a nation wide tour and his iconic album, Shift Left is being reissued on vinyl.
he was interviewed at home, and an LP was playing on his Garrard 401 fitted with a very expensive Ortofon cartridge. Couldn’t identify the rest of the system (a Leben amp?), but there was a great stack of LPs behind the sofa.
glad to hear he is in recovery!

i think he will be playing live tomorrow afternoon on natradio. back when he released the poet's embrace, he was using an early linn and beard amp, don't know what speakers. will checkout the interview on tvnz ondemand.
just watched on tv1+1
amp is an old sonic frontiers sfc-1 integrated.

Vinyl is due for release today. Squire for Hire needs a vinyl release too.
He's playing at Real Groovy Friday 5 pm tonight and is touring in August (playing at Civic Aug 24th). He's also recording a new solo album due later this year, no doubt in time for his tour.

Yes, should have recognised the face plate on the amp. Back when I was working and had money to chop and change gear, I had an SFL-1 Pre amp. It is a bit smaller than the SFC-1, but had similar face plate. Worked well with my Plinius SA100mkIi that I had at the time. Sonic Frontiers rose out of The Parts Connection, Canada, some of their products received rave reviews, then they disappeared!

sonic frontiers made some great sounding gear that wasn't silly priced even in nz i recall the pre/power amps, a cdp but never saw the integrated. iirc paradigm bought sonic frontiers and solid state company anthem. they quietly dropped sonic and developed anthem into a home theatre line.

Have spent quite a few evenings listening to the Sonic Frontiers SF-1. (From memory the associated system included SF-80 power amp with KT90s, CAL digital source, British floor standing, open mid-HF baffle loudspeakers, name escapes me..... )

The options for me seemed to be $50 from Mighty Ape (plus postage) $49.99 from JB HiFi. $54.95 from Southbound (less 10% loyalty card = $49.45) Not yet on the Amazons. I got mine from Flying Out for $47.70 ($53 less 10%). Happy to pay that for a NZ artist, to a NZ store for such a classic album! Currently spinning

Indeed. New vinyl prices are becoming a bit ridiculous. Long gone are the $20 to $30 new release prices we enjoyed just 5 years ago.

Sadly no, as it was going to take too long to get across town being a Friday afternoon I worked in Auckland 2005-2010 before I retired (and of course lived there until 1976 when I moved north) so understand exactly what you mean! Took me two hours to get from Manukau City to central Ak one Friday after work!

Airport to City is much better with the Waterview tunnel but still crossing the CBD can take forever. And then there's the parking...
I tend to walk into town a couple of times a week. Only takes me about half an hour to K Rd/Upper Queen St from home.
