Saw this movie today and can thoroughly recommend it. Tells the story of one Dr Don Shirley, an African American musician, classicly trained, on a road trip through the American southern states in the early 60s. He employed a street wise NY Italian to be his driver and assistant on the tour. The clash of their personalities provides some humour, to offset the serious message of discrimination.
The title is taken from a tour/accomodation guide named the Green Book, listing places where African Americans were allowed to stay when travelling through the segregated southern states.
It seems Don Shirley was highly regarded at the time and made many recordings. Haven’t seen any to date, but no doubt the movie may bring about some re-issues.
