The Penguin Guide to Classical Music was last produced as a 2010 edition & then superseded by a 'Penguin Guide to the 1000 Finest Classical Recordings' until 2012.
Originally produced in the 1960s for vinyl records, then later including cassettes & eventually entirely CDs by 1990, you can pick these up for very little now in s/hand bookstores.
A recognised good guide to classical recordings (although slightly British biased), commenting on interpretation & also recorded sound quality. It's also a bloody good read/browse - well over 1,000 pgs with capsule summaries of the records, covering every Classical composer you can think of. Shame that it is no longer produced.
I've got a couple of Penguin Classical guides from the 80s/90s but not the '1000 Finest Classical Recordings' edition.
There is also a 'Penguin Guide to Jazz' which was published from 1992 to 2010.
Again, 1000+ pages.
