I've been asked for my input via a local facebook page by a member wanting help getting a better bang from his Technics SL1200. From what I've been told he's currently using some sort of DJ phono stage and mixer but doesn't appear happy with an exaggerated bass response. I'd probably point him towards one of the entry level Project phono stages but have no idea what a similar level cartridge would be. The only names that I've had any experience with are Goldring and Sumiko so welcome any advice .

2 come to mind: Sumiko Black Pearl Ortofon 2M Red Have not heard either but under NZ$200. I know that the Sumiko Pearl (elliptical stylus) is v good. The Black Pearl has spherical stylus. 2M Red is elliptical I believe.

Thanks Owen. I believe I did have either a Pearl or Black Pearl on a lower lever Techinics TT but that would be at least 20 years ago. Memory banks don't work that far back very well.

Based on budget carts I've heard in my systems, I recommend
Audio Technica AT95, Goldring E1, or Ortofon OM10

I have a brand new still in its box Ortofon 2M Blue but I would want $250 for it. The current RRP is $375. It is a huge step up from the 2M Red.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Not sure what cartridge is being used at this time but suspect it maybe some sort of DJ thing. While the owner has asked for advice not sure if he wants to spend money or what a budget might be but at least I can offer some pointers.

I used a Black Pearl for a while when my Benz was being fixed. Sounds good for the money and very good for rock and metal.
I have a Shure V15 III with a brand new elliptical stylus that I'm going to sell just haven't got around to it yet $200.
