rubber rings that keep you on the road. often taken for granted, i find tyre tech an endlessly fascinating subject.
just removed the old potenza/laufenns from the renault and replaced with the performance tyre du jour, the amazing michelin pilot sport cup 2.

me too! there were pirelli p zero's on the mk4 4motion i bought about 8yrs ago now. almost bald after 16k kms but terrific grip and feedback thru the steering wheel, i put some toyo t1's on that car and they were quite ordinary. with the r32 i ran it with the toyo's and some michelins it came with - ps3's i think - and the michi's were better. the mk5 came with pirelli's on pirelli rims and stuck like glue. incredible but almost bald so i swapped them out when an option on some dunlop sp sports came along with 20km on them for $550. boy, do i regret that! it was going from driving on rails to just riding on top of the tarmac. i only do 2000km a year so they might last the next 10years!
so now you have started me thinking. life is too short for bad coffee and mediocre tyres too! how much were the cups? where?

There is a lot of hype around tyres ( a bit like hi fi really ! ) but in the end it comes down to rubber compound. The tread pattern is really only there for water drainage as demonstrated by the use of slicks in the dry. In simple terms soft compound gives best grip but short life. Hard compound has much less grip, particularly in the wet, but longer life. Racing slicks are run so hot they are almost melting but have fantastic grip at that point. I experienced the importance of warming up racing tyres and brakes many years ago when I slid off the first corner of a hillclimb event in our sports/racing car. That was exciting !!!!

my golf mk5 gti originally came on potenza re050a, very good but very soft (utqg 140). replaced with nitto nt05 - astonishing dry performance, average in the wet. next were potenza re002 - yuk, only had them on for a month. replaced with toyo t1 sports - ok but not sporty at all ! the megane i bought used, had an original pair of potenza re050a up front ans a new pair of laufenn on the back. the potenzas were almost done, the laufenns were rubbish. i was about to buy a new set of michelin pilot sport 4 when i saw the cups on trademe. they had done 2500km on a ford focus rs, the owner found they weren't great in wintery south island conditions so replaced with michelin super sports. they had a buy now of only $600. one new one in my size (235-35/19) is ~$610 ! got them fitted today. the tyre shop reckoned the old potenzas were worth nothing but the laufenns were worth $150-ish so gave me a fit, balance and wheel alignment in exchange for my old tyres ! win !

so i did some googling last night and made a phone call this morning and there is a set of super sports on their way down from the north island. it wasn't that the dunlops were bad, they were quite good in fact. but when i have experienced something excellent, then good just isn't good enough. i will find out how good the mpss's are late next week.

central city tyres here in chch. i checked hyperdrive and a couple of others. 225x40x18. $1550. hyperdrive were 1700 and beaurepaires were 1800.
currently i am averaging just over 2000km/yr over the past 2 yrs - most of which are from fun drives in the port hills, as a i use the electric bike around town (1500km/yr). so on a per year basis the costs won't be enormous and wear rates become unimportant.

If you want to make your eyes water.. try $970 a cover for the OEM fit of Michelin Pilot Super Sports 235/35/20's to shoe my horse, though I did find a cheaper source for the same at $840 ea. Ended up going back to RE050A's at a less eyewatering $540 ea. Always had a good run with those on my VE SV6.

Yeah, not often an extra inch means double the price! Astra VXR... not quite up with your Megane, but a barrel of fun none the less Interesting on the RE050A harshness comment... At this stage only replaced the rears with RE050A's due to nail damage.. and the wife reckons the ride is better.. a tad softer. We'll see how they wear. Hankooks were an option, but my tyre man reckoned I would be replacing them after about 15K.
