So here is an Internet search challenge - I'm usually pretty good at the Internet info hunt but this one has me stumped.
Question: What DAC is embedded in the Apple iPod HiFi?

Its not an iPod - its the white box 3 speaker Steve Job favourite - the iPod HiFI, as it is called. It has a mini toslink digital input and a DAC inside but I can't find what type it is. unlimited image hosting

Have you looked inside at the chip?

Nooooo - I think its a nightmare to open - you have to heat treat the front panel to remove the plasticky black speaker frontal (not the cloth cover which comes on and off easily) to get to the screws to get inside to what is a quite complex construction. This forum has some pics showing the amplifier is a Texas Instruments TPA3004D2T-amp. www.diyaudio.com/forums/class-d/83614-what-class-d-amp-ipod-hifi-2.htmlMaybe the dac is the PCM1802 seen below - which maybe a 24 bit Delta-Sigma - so maybe I have answered my own question and get the 5 bonus points ...

pretty sure now that the PCM1802 is an ADC and the PCM1754 is the DAC but interested to hear from anyone who can read a board full of chips better than me.

The 1802 is an ADC chip. The 1754 is a DAC chip. Is that what you need to know?

yep - Dac is a Burrr-Brown PCM1754 24-Bit 192-kHz Sampling Enhanced Multi-Level Delta-Sigma Audio chip. Apart from that one picture I can find no where else with that info anywhere. So thanks for confirming that the 1754 is the Dac.
I just need to find a mini-toslink to mini-toslink cable and I can do optical from airport express to the iPod HiFi. I've just had it a few days and quite enjoy its looks and sound. I find it a bit muddy at low levels but it reals comes alive with a decent volume.

I have now obtained a Toslink to Mini adapter and I am running the Apple HiFi off an airport express via digital optical. It is still 16/44 as that is the maximum of the airport express but whether its because of the optical cable, or because its now using the Apple HiFi's on board DAC, I am finding a really significant improvement in the sound. Muddiness at lower levels has disappeared and the speaker is now getting out of the way and presenting music very nicely indeed.
