As this forum was born out of, and largely inspired by AudioEnz, we'd like to acknowledge here Michael Jones' influence and motivation. We wish him again, all the best in the future. Possibly he may find time to lurk around here now & then, but I suspect he'll be much too engrossed applying his musical upbringing to Jive and Tango. Cheers, from the DarkLantern team.

Tautoko Owen, I have just joined after being plagued by a black screen for the last two days. I'm sure Michael will reflect favourably on the new forum as he catches his breath between bouts of strutting his stuff on the floor.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

Will the AE archives be kept and made available on line?

Hi sub (sorry about delay in replying....) I'm not sure if I can answer your question, Michael Jones is the owner of AudioEnz. However, I understand from MJ that he is not planning on taking down AudioEnz (in the immediate future anyway). Cheers.

So I guess the elephant in the room here is what will become of this forum if Marc Rushton comes in with a (shock, horror!) business model, advertising dollars and staff? Can NZ support two forums? It would be a shame after all the work Owen has put in here to see it killed by a bigger, flashier AudioEnz 2.0. Has been any communication between yourself and Marc or even Michael, Owen?

Grasshopper, thanks - it will be what it will be - I'm relaxed, 'tranqilo', life will go on. Online commercial hifi 'magazines' have not had great success in NZ of late. OTOH we are a non-commercial forum community, it's (always) up to members to make or break it, as a discussion forum. However I think we've built a bit of momentum over the past few months. I've communicated with MJ & I'm v happy that he has received a small final payday for all his efforts.

Good to know. The issue I see with the commercial forums is just that they have a commercial outlook and so I am somewhat suspicious of their review policies. Witchdoctor being a prime example. I much prefer a peer to peer type forum review such as this.

Post by Owen Y on Jul 24, 2017 9:20:25 GMT 12
Yes, often-times, we do not treat user-feedback as 'reviews' as such, but what makes 'professional' reviewers any more 'expert' or useful? OK, active pro reviewers have access to lots of equipment for comparison, but yes, commercial 'magazines' do rely on product suppliers & the 'industry' for revenue. But at end of the day, it is still whether the product satisfies at your home that counts.

Hi Owen,
That is all quite true. Funnily enough I am reasonably trusting of the print magazines it's just the online ones that I am distrusting of. You are quite correct about the in home audition but that is becoming a rare beast in todays marketplace (not that I'm really one to judge as I rarely buy anything these days any how !)

Right....I don't mean exactly home audition. I meant, does a 'pro' reviewer's written advice resemble what a product might sound at home? Most times you have to read 'between the lines' (Sounds like the topic for a thread here.)

Post by guitardude on Jul 24, 2017 10:12:13 GMT 12
Ah yes I see what you mean. Of the reviewers I read often, you get an idea of their likes and dislikes and so have a better idea of how their tastes might mesh with mine. As an aside I like it when they list the equipment they use for review as well.

I welcome the revival of AudioEnz and don't see it as a threat to this forum. However it is up to all of us to continue the friendly and helpful exchange of info and ideas on Dark Lantern so that it can continue to thrive. I value the unbiased opinion and knowledge of our members over that of a 'professional' reviewer.

I certainly hope that this forum continues. It's great to see some many familiar names from the AE years and I value the help and advice I've received from the same.

Post by sub on Jul 24, 2017 13:24:17 GMT 12
I was a member of the AE forum for many years, but I feel more engaged with this forum - and have probably posted here more frequently than I ever did at AE.

The reason for that sub is that this forum is so much easier to use than the old AE forum which ended up being a right pita.

This forums scene is interesting - I haven't figured it out yet but.... We've tried to make this forum 'inclusive', ie. all-comers welcome. Including visitors located offshore (or on the high seas klaatu ) It's clear that, for survival (& growth), forums need to be welcoming & not present themselves as an 'exclusive club'. Typically, there are 4 times as many 'guests' vs 'members', reading our forums, over a 24hr period. (Guests, of course, could be members not logged-in or non-members. Often UK or USA 'guests' - incl google & search engine bots.) I have been a member of another special-interest forum for many years, but seldom posted because my depth of knowledge of the subject is minimal & also because it does feel like a 'clique' environment. We do not want that here, we want to hear from/about any enthusiasts or newcomers who are entering this area of madness.

Hell, any club that will allow me in can't be too exclusive but for what it's worth, I'd like to see this forum continue and grow. I might just throw irreverent wise cracks and rip the piss - but you geeks are so heavy I need a little levity while I read and learn.

When Rushton took over DTV forum he stated that nothing would change and that both SNA and DTV would remain separate. he then announced that he had bought the rights to AudioEnz and would also be running that as a separate forum with little or no connection to SNA. Meanwhile the contributing membership of DTV dropped off to a trickle, All the SNA moderation team took over the running of DTV. And surprise, surprise, Rushton has just announced that DTV will no longer exist, and be swallowed up by SNA. Membership from DTV will be incorporated into the SNA listings. SNA has a huge banned list [ and still growing], How this will effect the old DTV membership is up in the air, as many banned SNA members went over to DTV.
It will be no surprise if Rushton also incorporates AudioEnz into the SNA mould and AudioEnz disappears. I really don't thing "Dark Lantern" has any reason to be concerned. What Rushton forgets or fails to understand is "He's Stuck in the one place" and contributes // members can post anywhere on any forum they chose. . Or as someone said on DTV, before the thread was closed, "It's his train set"
