Salutations my fellow geeks, and here we go again... So I have a pair of Duntechs sitting centre stage in my music room with nothing to drive them. And I'm poor. 😕
I have two amps in the house presently. A Copland CSA 14 which is a lovely, warm, and reasonably punchy wee gem of an amp. Hybrid. Drives my Celestion SL600s very nicely. The other is an MF a3. Tis nice. Was bought as a back up amp but did quite well on the Duntechs... Until it cooked. So off to colinf it went and has come back to me with the caution that trying to feed the Duntechs with the amp is a recipe for disaster. 😳 Oops. So what to do?
Ive had an interesting time with the Duntechs. Tried them. Didn't like them. Changed my mind and bought em and have had mixed feelings about them ever since. Granted I've never been able to feed them properly so it could be argued that I've never really heard them at their best. I can't afford a pair of fuck-off-big monos as I would like to and the market is limited for sub 2.5k integrateds. Second hand Krell? That's always been my plan. I reckon I could land a KAV 300i from Aus for around 2k. Or in the 'new' market, the Yamaha A-S1100 holds appeal and really reads well with both reviewers and end users. I've been quite surprised at who rates this amp and what they're driving with it. They have an RRP of 3k but are always 'on special' for 2.5k. How do the older Krells fare? Would it likely need a recap? What other options should I consider? What have you guys got in your cupboards? 😜
The other option is of course, to lose the Duntechs. But I'm not certain I want to. And I'm not certain what I'd replace them with as I like to be able to swap between more than one pair of speakers. And I live in the middle of nowhere so there is a logistical nightmare with shipping these large and largely unknown behemoths.
So lots to chew on and frankly, no great rush. I'd have to sell both my current amps to do any of this as we are saving for a house and there really is no money for HiFi at this point in my life. I'm just considering possibilities and would appreciate any thoughts or advice you fine gentlemen may be able to impart.
Cheers,
Rev. J
