I've been dredging through the archives the last week or so and rediscovering various albums from My Morning Jacket, Bill Callahan and Will Oldham. Now that I seem to have tightened my urge to buy it's time to appreciate what I have.
Re W Oldham, I was for many years a religious purchaser of his (to) many releases under various names but after building a collection of around 25 lps, plus singles, cds, I appear to have reached critical mass and haven't looked at any of his later records from the last couple of years. However enjoyed Viva Last Blues on the walk to work this morning.

While I only have vinyl copies of about a dozen of his, I'm really enjoying his latest Merle Haggard covers (Best Troubador). Recent releases (as Bonny Prince Billy) Pond Scum is OK but More Revery is well worth a listen.

I often play the Tchaik & Mendelssohn concertoes, but never bothered much with the Bruch (No.1), despite it being one the most popular of all Viol Concs. I've had this for a while, again Kyung Wha Chung, regarded amongst the best, if not the best. Then I found it on Miyajima's webpage (ie. one of his 'test' recordings) - so finally giving it some deserved TT time Here is a vid of her playing it, only a yr or two after the above acclaimed Decca recording which she did at the age of 24..... It's a beautiful piece. A rivetting performance.

Nothing like a bit of Irish angst to cheer you up! Must be the Irish in me - Brierley, Lynch and Creamer in my Mum's line. Listening now to "Irish Heartbeat", van Morrison and The Chieftans, 1988 recording on Mercury label, but "manufactured and marketed in Australasia by Polygram under license", so either NZ or Aus pressing. Nevertheless, even though bought 2nd hand in 90s, still a lovely silent surface and great sound. Hasn't been off the shelf for at least 8 years!

Great album. Van completely in his element. My fav tracks - Carrickfergus, Irish Heartbeat, Raglan Road....? I think I have an Australian & USA copy. Will compare them again. It is commonly found in s/h bins. Worth grabbing.

I also like his skiffle sessions album though I've not seen it on Vinyl. If you like the chieftans one try Dexys latest, the name of which I cant think of right now but it's brilliant.

I often play the Tchaik & Mendelssohn concertoes, but never bothered much with the Bruch (No.1), despite it being one the most popular of all Viol Concs. I have never heard the Bruch concerto either, so your post got me delving - rediscovered this in the collection - A four record box set by DGG in the Classical Master Series, bought 2nd hand about 3 years ago. As photo shows some mildew patches on the cover but contents very clean and LPs mint. Contains the Bruch Violin Concert No1, on DGG 2532 016, Anne-Sophie Mutter violin, Berlin SO, Karajan. Just finished listening to it, and yes deserves its place among the greats. Only takes just over 26minutes to perform, but some lovely lyrical moments. May have other versions as well, but not delved too deeply into the collection as yet! Years ago when I avidly collected stamps, I used a product called Napisan, a very mild bleach that I diluted for cleaning. People dont seem to use cotton nappies any more and the product is no longer on the market. Any ideas for dealing to the mildew on this cover? Not keen to use ordinary bleach, even heavily diluted. Attempts with diluted dishwash have not worked.

The last couple of days have offered up various bits from the likes of Smog/Bill Callahan, 16 Horsepower and early Stones in mono. Unfortunately mostly via IEMs on the way to work or bedside system. Time spent in the music room, very little.

Thanks Citreon, I should have been more specific - the product I used years ago was in a liquid form, not the powdered variety available today. I have powdered napisan among the laundry supplies, might try it, but as MW says, if dishwasher didn't get it off, may be best to leave it.

Rediscovered this band recently. What a vocal! She could turn a lyric too; 'I've never met a boy quite like you who could shimmer and rot at the same time too.' Awesome gal. Saw them at The Zoo in Brisbane many moons ago and hung with the band after the show... I have some memory of the evening. But not so much.

Well, that got me digging in the archives - actually not that hard to do right now as I sorted everything into alphabetical order last March. Found - Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Tossy Spivakovsky Violin, London SO, Tauno Hannikainen conductor. Seems I have a gem on my hands, the late Tossy Spivakovsky, according to Google, is regarded as one of the best violin virtuoso of the 20th century, while the late Hannikeinen is not only a compatriot of Sibelius, he was a great friend and knows the music intimately. First recorded and released on the Everest label in 1960, reissued many times, and the copy I have is a reissue on the Concert Hall label SMSC 2559 pressed 1968. Oh my, what a performance. Definitely belongs with the greats. Amazingly, for a 2nd hand album, it has a lovely blemish free silent surface after just a light clean. facebook photos upload

Have you tried Magic Eraser? Googled that, and it is exactly the same as White Magic sold by Briscoes, and we have four of those in our cleaning kit. Gave it a go on an inconspiculus place on the back, but it is too effective and started taking off the printing as well!

Janis Ian, a compilation cassette on Sony/CBS label, issued around 1977. All her biggies, amazing analogue sound, but a bit of an effort to get it playing.
I have a Pioneer CT 95 cassette deck, with Dolby B,C&S, with an electronically opening and closing door. Trouble was the door wasn't closing properly and the cassette wasn't engaging with the drive capstan. So, took the lid off and after a bit of faffing found one of the clips engaging with the cassette holder wasn't engaging, and seemed to have a bit broken off it. So, disengaged the outer door and now manually load the cassette. Plays fine, and since the machine does't get that much use it will do - save an expensive repair bill, and or the purchase of another 2nd hand one. The outer door is now permanently open - just need to vacuum it out from time to time to avoid dust build up.
Haven't heard Janis for a while - great fan of hers way back when! Brings back memories.

A fine album, one of my favourite albums, full of acoustic instrumentation & quirkiness too Their last & most recent (I think) 'Modern Blues' is worthwhile too, if you hanker for a bit more of their electric band mojo. The Waterboys will of course always be measured against their early stuff, 'This is the Sea' esp. Thks.

some time in the listening chair last evening : whoever said Italians don't 'do' jazz? - should try this: I'm spending plenty of ear time with Paolo Fresu, my current favourite trumpeter.
then:First time on the ESL system...whoda thought this local pressing could sound so good? and lastly: Typical Steve Hillage production of this time - nicely done, but a 'time capsule' now - must dig out the companion 'Sister Feelings Call' for a spin - if I can locate it. (my vinyl collection is currently in a shambles - many boxes and albums out of alphabetical order etc: I moved abode )
