I'm listening to the LPs I brought back from our recent trip up top. The first five albums by Hermanos Gutierrez Ry Cooder's "Prodigal Son" Herbie Mann latin jazz that sounds like the build up to a fight-scene in a James Bond movie. A UK Stone Roses LP, early press. Congolese Latin jazz by Franco and OK Jazz Mozart's 20th D minor piano concerto by Clifford Curzon/Britten Burt Bacharach's "Reach Out" reissue on Elemental

"August 17th marked the 65th anniversary of arguably one of the most influential jazz albums and Miles’ most associated work. Today we celebrate Miles’ enduring legacy and the beginning of the configurations of the Jazz we know today – all sparked by a single, groundbreaking vision."

Its good, very good and better than my 2010 reissue but not that much better I'm perpetually interested in the scenario where some music-lovers prefer the most updated versions and others prefer original versions. Here, my 'better' is a 1959 mono Columbia 6-eye pressing with a weary sleeve and a few pops. It was bought locally for what I thought was a decent price. Quite likely similar to the UHQR.
To my heart, 'better' includes peripheral bonuses like knowing somebody walked into a record shop in 1959 keen to hear the new Miles LP and subsequently looked after it but clearly took it around like a trophy to share with like minds. That a record I'm looking after was on the earth a full 4 years before me. Cheap thrills, I know.
Sound quality is subjective to a point, but we here would all know the difference between a VG- pressing and the UHQR. My copy bears some scars of time but there is a very good pressing locked into those grooves, with extra zing in all the horn sounds.
With a little confidence, I am assuming it's from the fresh end of its stamper's life. For this reason, buying a copy that looks better is never a guarantee it sounds better as it may be from the arse-end of a run. Always listen if you can.
Interestingly, the numbers in the run-out groove are hand-etched and that's something extremely rare in a mass-produced Columbia LP. It was their golden age, almost nothing was done in small amounts. A wiser brain than I on these matters has absolutely no idea why this would be, but there it is!

I tend to stay away from originals due to unknown quality, and price.
Buying new takes the one and often two of those factors out of the equation.
But yes, the history of that '59 LP, how many hands have touched and loved it?!

Same applies to sealed records Most US Columbia's will have hand etched numbers. Stamped was more a Euro/Japanese thing.

This sounds Very good! In fact Amazingly realistic and present, despite a few clicks. And only another $2 album. I like the manipulation, its GREAT! I'll be looking out for any other Phase 4 releases. In my system this is so open, and realistic. 11 out of 10! I'm blown away at how fantastic this sounds. The Well-Tempered Trumpet, Phase 4 Stereo Concert Series Please send me recommendations for other Phase 4 albums!

NICK CAVE - Wild God A much cheerier Nick Cave these days! But a few gripes about the vinyl. Cheap, thick cardboard outer sleeve so tightly glued together that its near impossible to get the LP back in. Sounds harsh and bright on some tracks. Otherwise, a welcome addition to his work.

Sounds dreadful to me. My ears are bleeding!

Deliberate choice to compress and distort?
"After a playback of the album in full, Nick answered audience questions for over an hour and discussed how the album was mixed. He is well aware of how divisive Dave Fridmann's mix is and said that it caused problems in the Bad Seeds camp as some members of the Bad Seeds hated the mix."

Labour Day disappointments. Lone Justice should have left the tapes in the garage, Sean Magee's name promised good sounds, undone by another Bernie hackjob. The worse sounding Lone Justice album ever. Nathan Haines sounds fat and overcooked like a FFD clone. Neither record has country of original information. New records continue to suck
