I am one of the great many who benefited from Owen's generosity of spirit. I know my system runs as sweetly as it does thanks to conversations with him. My best wishes to your family, Jeremy. Dom

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for the kind words, I have shown this to my family and they are blown away by the support you guys have shown. As mentioned above, there will be a service to celebrate his life tomorrow (Saturday 24 April) at All Saints Church, Ponsonby, Auckland at 1 pm. You are all welcome. Cheers, Jeremy PS. There are a couple of short videos on this Instagram post where where you can see us listening to his hi-fi system. On the fourth video (press the arrow on the right of the post), we are testing the Gainclone amplifier I built. On the sixth video we were interested in comparing one of my old Technics 1210 mk2 turntables to the SP10 mk2 he has been experimenting with. http://instagr.am/p/CN-uwQZMGJU

Nice to hear Dom playing beforehand.

I'm really sorry that I suddenly wasn't able to attend, although I'd intended to.
Is there any chance that there was a recording, such as for Gary Morrison recently, that might come up later?
Best wishes and condolence to Jeremy and the family.

So sad to hear this news and whilst I only knew Owen briefly and through this forum, Owen's generosity and assistance to me shows that the world has lost a true gentleman. Condolences to Jeremy and family Rest in Peace

Its still strange to think Owen is not with us anymore.
I just had a question I thought he'd know the answer to and then only just realised he couldn't reply, as he usually would...

To Owens friends here..
Clearly he was the foundation stone of our audio forum. I had had a few pms with him over the years and always found him very helpful and knowledgeable in all facets of audio. Clearly he was well invested in our silly hobby.. To Owens family.. Your dad, grandad was clearly "the leader of the band" here and will be solely missed for now and always. Hopefully the admins here will keep us all going with fond and strong memories of the man we all knew as the boss.

Thanks for all the messages guys. The service on Saturday was really nice and we were blown away by how many people turned up. It really captured his life and we think Dad would have really enjoyed it. . We are planning to gather all the Eulogy's and put them online so that those who were unable to attend can download and read them. Cheers, Jeremy

This is a belated condolence.
I learnt of Owen's passing today from a fellow audiophile. I posted on Audiogon that I had learnt quite a lot from Owen regarding the Trans-Fi Terminator. It was the custom arm board that he designed and all his posts on the arm that convinced me to take the plunge. Exchanged emails a couple of times and he was always gracious in his reply.

Thanks very much for those pdfs Jeremy. The awful outstanding question in my mind has been - how did it happen? Was it a solo accident? Or was he hit by a car? Etc. Sorry to ask!

To be fair RDM, you probably arent the only one who has wondered that ! I think it is because Owen seemed so alive and full of life that it seems strange that he has gone from our lives...

Thanks for putting those up J. Must admit I did wonder this too and checked my One News app for any clue, but couldn’t see anything.

Yes he was hit by a vehicle whilst riding. It is still under investigation but from the accounts we have heard, the driver failed to see him and came through a give way sign. Dad was indeed really fit and healthy for a 70 year old, riding multiple times per week, often 100+ kms on Sunday morning. He was experienced, cycling religiously for 40+ years and was always very cautious on the road.

Jeremy and others, I only know Owen through his YouTube videos and this forum. I'd messaged him a few times in the past weeks with no response. I'm new to the forum and just read this as my heart sank. I had no idea he'd passed. My belated condolences to friends and family. I'd really looked forward to getting to know him as it seems we're kindred spirits based on his builds and tonearm choice (Trans-Fi Terminator). Warmest regards, Evan

I never had the good fortune to meet Owen, but as a relative newcomer to these forums, I couldn't help but be impressed by his erudition and helpfulness. It's obvious from the responses that he was much-loved and respected. Thanks Owen, you will be missed.

I had only ever communicated with Owen by email and online but even in that limited context his kindness and intelligence shone through. He built the horn speakers I still play every day. My respects to him and to his loved ones.

In memory of Owen and his love of cycling, as the 2021 Tour has begun. (I particularly enjoy the helicopter shots of the villages, countryside etc. as part of the Tour's TV sports coverage too)

In memory of Owen and his love of cycling,
From the finish of Tour de France in earlier years, (1920's) when tobacco was still appreciated for what it is and can be.
I don't know if Owen smoked or or not, but I'd think he might be forgiving of those who did. I'd hope so, anyway!

Thanks guys. Dad always had my cousin record The TDF and burn it to DVDR so that he could watch it during his weekly wind-trainer session. He had a TV set up especially in front of his bike in the basement. I'll have to dig out his copy of Kraftwerk - TDF

Hi Guys Last night at AAS (Auckland Audiophile Society), there was an announcement that Owen Young had passed away, a true gentleman and a wealth of knowledge, you will be greatly missed, RIP Owen and Godspeed, my thoughts and prayers to the family, Deano
sub This announcement about the tragic loss of OWEN YOUNG was made in April 2021. At that time, I was busy relocating my family from Auckland New Zealand, to Hangzhou, China - which took months of diversion - so I'm sorry to say that I was unaware. I just had this very sad news brought to my attention, today - four months later. (Thank you, Sub...)
Back in the 1990s, Owen and I crossed paths, through our mutual love of hi-fi and music.
I can't recall where we met, but our chance encounter lead to Owen inviting me to his Herne Bay, Auckland home, where he introduced me to his (then, just completed) scratch-build Single-Ended Triode amplifier. It was a thing of beauty, complete with a solid copper top-plate. An Audio Note design, I think. Owen's creation sounded a treat, driving his horn-loaded, single driver speakers. Needless to say, we had a great time. Subsequently, I was lucky enough to enlist Owen's architectural services and expertise, during the complete remodeling of our Mt. Eden Californian bungalow. Owen did me proud and the project was a big success.
Over the years that followed, I have personally been on the Single-ended Triode amp and Single-driver speaker journeys - all inspired by the time I spent with Owen.
As smart as they some, Owen was a man of many talents. I can only mirror what others have said above. Owen was a thoroughly lovely man - as wise and knowledgeable as he was kind and understanding. Reading many of the tributes above, I feel lucky to have actually spent some time with Owen - in the flesh.
This world has truly lost a great one.
RIP Owen. Our prayers and deepest thoughts are with your family and close friends.
-Tony [ SONDEK / SONDEKNZ ]
