Hard to disagree with many of the choices on those lists but as you say very US centric. For my money i'd have to add a Naim and a Leak stereo 20 at the very least. In terms of NZ made surely the PMF2150b would have to rate a mention ?

nix on naim , they were horrid back in the 70s/80s/90s
flat, one-dimensional, transistory but punchy and toe-tapping.

better !
the climb from mediocrity started in 2000 with the nap500 power amplifier.
the same year company founder julian vereker died.

I see... Haven't made it all the way through the article yet, but thus far no mention of Bryston? Krell and Bryston being top contenders for my next amp. Second hand. Very second hand. Third or fourth even!?

Hey MW,
That KAV300i is an absolute cracker, its what i've been advised Mr Heathen to buy. Cant quite agree with you on Naim though. Though not to my taste, for a while there in the mid 80's they were the amp du jour, hard to get away from magazines, retailers and audio guys recommending them. Also seem to be now very collectable in their earlier guises. In terms of sonic worthiness theres a few on those lists I'd take issue with: GAS Ampzilla I didn't find to be a particularly inspiring listen and as for the Plinius integrated: No thanks.

i've got a little kav-300i integrated. This is where I think I'll land. Commonly pop on Steronet Classifieds for around a K... What's your beef with Bryston, out of curiosity?

they sound blah. not bad not good just blah... sleepy time
there was a funny krell on tardme last week...
branded k300i, not kav-300i it had the horizontal krell logo, not the rocketship, so was a second gen or later. but it had a first gen clickity clack remote. research shows it was a japanese market variant. don't know why it got an abbreviated nametag...

Bryston amps - perhaps you need to partner Shahinians with them? I seem to recall that was common match-up back when.
|
Post by michaelw on Apr 28, 2017 17:06:19 GMT 12
that's a new one...
locally shahs are more commonly associated with with plinius and lately, aussie dynavectors.
bryston is used as a reference by magnepan.

I remember Soundline demo-ing with both. A Denco connection IIRC? Richard Shahinian also like SS.

I don't ever recall having seen Brystons at Soundline in CHCH. Bedini and Accuphase were the SS lines I recall them having. I thought I read somewhere that Bryston were affiliated with PMC, and Magnepan with ARC ?
The last Brystons I remember seeing about were in the 80's, don't ask me where, and from memory they were brown with cream lettering ? No integrateds just separate pre power combinations.

Sold my 8150 very recently. Very sad to see it go. It was amazing. Made beautiful music and never put a wrong step since I bought it. Ran it with a transformer volume control and it sounded great too. Now what do I do with the tvc now? It was a very versatile amp, being able to drive it with a HT receiver or a preamp, or in my case a volume control, as well as being able to drive more amplification as well. Still, a great amp! On the old audioenz forum we did an experiment with Gary M and figured out what voltage/watts we were using and at loudest was still less than 5 watts.

I'm keeping mine as a back up amp. It performed remarkably well with Magnepan 1.6 and ML Summits.

On the old audioenz forum we did an experiment with Gary M and figured out what voltage/watts we were using and at loudest was still less than 5 watts. Indeed - welcome chilli... This calculator is handy for telling you what average watts is actually required for your spkrs & listening room. So, 5Wpc with medium sensitivity spkrs (say 86-87dB/W), will give you LOUD average SPLs at 3.5m or so listening distance. Always remember that your amp should have say another 10x (20dB) extra Wpc in reserve to cope with dynamic swings - depending on type of music, Jazz less maybe, classical music definitely required. So, 50wpc maybe, would be good in this instance.

Haven't tried that one Citroen, hope its a bit more full and flavoursome than the plinius integrated variety.

That's fighting talk guitardude! I find the Plinius 8150 very full and flavoursome, maybe at times too flavoured. The Plinius 9200 I very much disliked. That needed more full and flavoursome sound.
