Cheers Owen. I'm running a Garrard 401 (original plinth for now), SME 3009 / Shure M75ED, feeding A&R Cambridge A60 (built in pre) and Mirage M260 speakers.

Excellent. I have a 401 as well. Classic arm/cart/amp but not familiar with the Mirage speakers.

A&R A60 - one of the classic wee amps. I used to listen to one regularly at my neighbour's. He loved his A60 - sold it but bought one again.

Ha, that seems to be the story with anyone who sells an AR60. Mine was a chance discovery at Axent Audio while returning a misbehaving NAD. The Mirage 260s are Canadian late-80s bigger bookshelf, bought new in 1989 on a recommendation from Absolute Sound in Parnell. 6" bass/mid and 1" poly tweeter in a well thought out ported cab. Nice accurate but still real-world sound - I was using them for recording studio nearfields for a long time and they compared very well to a pair of big Tannoys, to the point where we'd switch and forget we were listening to the Mirages - decent bass, very good imaging. Treble a whisker splashy but paired with the AR60 it's a great combo. They're on sand-filled stands. I've blown a few drivers over the years (ahem, uncompressed bass/snare) but they seem to be fairly generic units. Mirage still exist I think but moved into surround.

johnpitcairn - assuming it's OK with you, we'll give your system its own thread under New member introductions.

Of course, I should have done it here in the first place.

The 401 is a recent acquisition and I'm very happy with it. It's likely that I'll strip it down for a full clean this year.
My previous TT is a Thorens TD165 with an Osawa OS301 cart that is/will be for sale. That combo gives the 401/M75ED a run for it's money on initial listening, but can't match the 401 bass/mid immediacy. I have a spare TP60 headshell and a sliver-rewired TP11 wand that I never fitted that will also be available. The Osawa is a poor match for the 401/SME, incidentally, sounds flabby and dull.
Also also, a working Thorens TD150 that needs some love and was to be a project. Had one 20 years ago, sold it, regretted it ever since. Not sure what its future will be.

welcome john, there's a magical something with good rim drives and direct drives that belt drive tables just can't match.

Kia ora johnpitcairn's "...feeding A&R Cambridge A60 (built in pre)..."
A classic, highly musical little UK amp. I brought an A&R60 back from London in 1985. It did brilliantly as the engine-room of my then LP12 and Mission 717 system until 1993, when replaced by a Naim 92/90.3 pre/power combo. (sometimes I wish I could have kept all the earlier gear I enjoyed...hmmm) Enjoy our forum and looking forward to your input.
