A known phenomena is that some woods with high tannin content (Oak is well known & this I think, is the origin of 'black Oak') will turn black when exposed to water + iron/steel - I had used a steel blade to mix & fill. Black staining you see around ferrous nails in wood is also caused by this. So, I had to dig it out & re-fill (using a SS knife this time) - this time, no blackening. [Edit: Only the original historic blackening in the wood remains, as it did before filling.] If there's a next time, while at the raw wood stage (too late now it's sealed) try oxalic acid to remove the black stains. Examples: Bunnings has it: Beautiful work!

Thanks RdM. I didn't think of that. And I do have some oxalic acid too (used for cleaning up deck furniture once). The nail stains (like the black marks around old floorboard nails) are now part of the 'rustic' patina

Lately it's been awful weather for painting work (damp, cold), so it's taken a while to get a 3-coat finish dry - I realised that sealer coat & finish coats all had to be done before installing PSU parts. So here we are,... a mock-up with the front panel meter & rectifier tube...

Looks good! Any ventilation for the power transformer...how warm does it run? Edit...sorry I can see ventilation holes on the front now.

Hi colinf - I don't recall if the PTX gets very warm, it's been a while. But yes, perforated alumin front plate (see my earlier 1 May post).
