It felt like my birthday, three parcels arrived at once today. One from my TM order with Deep Discount, the six CD remastered set of Beethoven Symphonies conducted by furtwangler; One very heavy parcel from CHCH, my TM purchase of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, second hand but the LPs look mint, the outer box has minor scuffing, but the individual boxes look pristine - original Decca pressings; and lastly My YepRoc order of two Mandolin Orange LPs - minor disappointment as they had included in incorrect title, which I am sure they will fix!

Reviving this thread of sub's for the old-school squares around here who still acquire 'hard copy' music.... Secondly, there's been a a lot of talk about the rising cost of vinyl records. I schemed a rare lunch date with Mrs on Sat, at a decent Ramen joint in town, which... just happens to be right across the road from Southbound Records John Prine succumbed to coronavirus recently at 73, a folk/country legend & this is his obligatory duets album (one of them). Features Iris Dement 3 times, Lucinda Williams & Emmylou Harris among others - so a must-get for me. I thought I'd missed out on this 1998 Daniel Lanois-produced 2xLP highlight (Willie's Wrecking Ball?), now rare & like unobtainium & expensive, so was mighty surprised to find this (new) copy at Southbound. Yup, vinyl is pricey to buy locally, but Southbound gave a 'loyalty' discount of ~20% off, so that's likely cheaper than Amazon (unless you import a small stack of LPs)

Had the Prime on cd for some years, didn't realise it was on vinyl. I'm a bit of a fan of Lanois and Nelson so that was a no brainier on release. Did you get the vinyl Wrecking Ball that came out in 2016? If I only kept one Emmylou record that would be the one.

My first Rarewaves purchase arrived this morning, but with the bare minimal of packaging (one layer, no edge or corner protection). Surprisingly no damage to Ry Cooder's Trespass. Great prices but the packaging is not really up to it for a trans global journey.

Definitely not if only buying one lp. Maybe if getting a few as they can buffer each other. I doubt I'll use them again

Ah yes I do have a copy of Wrecking Ball, always impressed when an iconic artist goes out on a limb. I have a soft spot for Spy Boy too, again because it's a bit of a departure - but also because I was lucky to see her tour that album here in the late 90s. She's one gracious, classy woman. PS. I saw Grievous Angel (new) too at Southbound - 'remastered'?

Must have words with them I think they are replacing the loyalty card with a computer-based discount system, so my card discounts were rounded up or such. Possibly a one-off

It turns out that this is a 2014 'remaster' with 50mins of music spread over 4 vinyl.sides. Recorded quasi-live in this disused old theatre, with Emmylou, Lanois & a few instrumentalists accompanying Willie - a provisional 10.5/10 for SQ - more on this later....

There is a 2017 multi disc cd/dvd with a concert performance of the album but looks like it could be getting a bit expensive now. www.discogs.com/Willie-Nelson-Teatro-The-Complete-Sessions/release/11075895There's also a multi disc version of Wrecking Ball with a mini doco on the recording. www.discogs.com/Emmylou-Harris-Wrecking-Ball/release/5638682I've long thought that Spyboy would be a great release for a multi disc box set with both audio and video sets, Bits and pieces on You Tube but a couple of complete concerts would be nice.

Snippets of the Wrecking Ball doco in the living room of Lanois' Louisiana house at night (eg. with Neil Young in attendance), were very good & informative of the recording & Lanois' production style. The Teatro film on location in the theatre was directed by Wim Wenders, I read. Will have to dig deeper into this.

Mac Miller's best album IMHO, c/o this morning's Rarewaves package. Also on red vinyl, as was the EXCELLENT Trespass! "Watching Movies With the Sound Off"

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY - The Wilderness Third red vinyl from Rarewaves package. Didn't know any of them were this colour, as the Rarewaves info is sparse to say the least, so pleasant surprise. I love these guys. If you're not familiar then think instrumental post rock, soaring symphonic soundscapes, guitar driven melodies. Shame the sound quality on this one is mediocre ;(

Billie Eilish – Don't Smile At Me Rarewaves vinyl. Red 2017 EP of 8 tracks. If you haven't heard her album "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" then you really should.

Pre-ordered in July, and arrived today from Flying Out SUFJAN STEVENS - ASCENSION vinyl Its Sufjan and so a must have no matter what! Not A Carrie and Lowell, and must admit its been a luke warm listen for me. More synthesizer, with the usual splatter of mythic and religious references.

Looks better than my one !
What number did you get ?
Does it play OK ?
Mine looked like a dozen gorillas had stomped on it but the pressing was quiet and it actually sounded good for a digie.

An interesting experience, what could have been a disappointment had a happy ending. I hit buy now on a 7 LP box set of Beethoven’s complete piano trios, featuring the Beaux Arts Trio, on Phillips 6725 035, several weeks ago. The owners were moving house and the TM listing was done for them by their son, but the owners could not find the box. They finally got hold of one of their move helpers, who recalled they had put the box in the “op shop” pile! The lovely lady selling the records was able to retrieve them,, insisted on driving from Kerikeri to Mangonui, where we met for morning tea. Not only did she hand over the box set, but she refused to acccept payment and also gave me another 3 LP box set - Brahms, quintet Op 34, and quartets Op 25, 26, and 60, featuring Rubinstein on piano and the Guarneri Quartet, on RCA SAR 22076/78. They said because I had been mucked around, they could not expect me to pay! The boxes are very tidy and the LPs show no signs of wear, but they will be having an ultrasonic clean before I play them - which will be some time away as have quite a backlog of LPs waiting to be cleaned. Interesting to see that the op shop had already put stickers on the boxes, pricing the Beethoven set at $25 and the Brahms at $15!

Bit of release of my tight reign this year and had a small splash out with Import CDs. Hopefully due this week Caravan , first self titled and second album, If I Could Do it All Over Again, both 2001 cd reissues.
Tindersticks, See My Girls, 12" ep and on cd Curtains, deluxe double set.
Prices and shipping still reasonable with this seller and I've found them reliable over the years.

On it's way from Townsville(Aus) via Discogs , a Sacd copy of Blackjack David by Dave Alvin. Not sure what prompted this purchase as I have the excellent hdcd version and the 2xlp Mobile Fidelity release. Couldn't resist the still sealed MoFi Sacd though.
That's two purchases for the year, be catching Citroen at this rate. 😏
