I can't remember if the 'covers' thread was here (DL) or elsewhere I dug out my CD remaster of Yes' Time and a Word today. I've always rated 'Everydays' their superb cover of the Buffalo Springfield song. Kaye: (moody) organ, swelling strings and the 'flash' prog/jazzy bridge where Banks: (guitar), Bruford: (genius) drums and Squire: bass hit an early musical peak. My vinyl is a NZ release with this cover (Banks gone, but Howe in the photo)

I'm partial to this version of Richard Thompson's When the Spell is Broken Bonnie Raitt and the Blind Boys of Alabama from the excellent tribute cd , Beat the Retreat.

I can't remember if the 'covers' thread was here (DL) or elsewhere foveaux - not sure if you mean the Album Cover Art thread...? If so, we can merge the 2 threads.

Hi Owen, Apologies, just checked, it was a thread on the old Audioenz forum called 'Covers that were better than the original' (p.s. where is Maxgate? miss his insight )

Hi Owen another thought - change the thread title to 'cover versions' if you agree this is more accurate?

Cover versions - yes, I don't think we have a specific thread. Good idea, there should be good debate here

Pretty difficult to better Vic Chesnutt doing his own songs but a thumbs up to this cover of Supernatural by half of the Cowboy Junkies. Some of the bite that Chesnutt's voice brings to the original is lost but hard to argue against Margo Timms singing.

Cowboy Junkies also famously covered Sweet Jane on their Trinity Sessions album, a cover that even Lou endorsed. I follow this blog: www.covermesongs.com/which has a lot of great material covered.
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

You probably know the story of when Elvis wanted to record Dolly Parton's composition "I will Always Love You" - she didn't like Elvis' manager's aggressive offer so, tough little lady, she turned down Elvis Presley. However, almost 20 years later, Dolly got her biggest payout when Whitney Houston turned it into the biggest single of all time by a woman. Says Dolly after Whitney's version came out, 'I made enough money to buy Graceland!'

whitney totally overcooks her rendition, setting the pace for future generations of female vocal histrionics.

This one is a bit different, a song writer performing his own songs, that had been made famous by other singers, Dan Penn - “Do Right Man”. 1994 Sire Records, 9362-45519-2 Haven’t played this cd in a while, used to be a favourite and was played frequently.

All inside our Amsterdam she hides Watery-eyed That howling wind, she's waving hi Her other hand's in mine Oh silhouette She's growing tall and fine She's got my back She'll follow me down every street No matter what my crime All inside Amsterdam she flies Hoarding the kites That howling wind, she'll take everything But she's easy on the eyes Churches and trains They all look the same to me now They shoot you someplace While we ache to come home somehow

Like it or loath it Whitneys rendition of Dollys song has to be one of the most powerful songs ever recorded by a woman in the popcorn music scene.

Just trawling through my collection of flac files, I see I have, and have played again tonight, tracks off, of, Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra, Enjoy! I mean, I have the album and propose some on youtube as available samples.
These are covers, with a great singer, and an 18 piece orchestra added to the (I think) guitar bass drums, or whatever?
Hyperballad
Actually, that's the whole album.
Stop after the first track and consider this live version, from the side, seeing the orchestra onside.
Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra: Hyperballad
What a wonderful intimate view.
There's also a documentary early? which relates to that.

Ah well ...
Later, then!
Keeping alive.

The Move .. Don't make my Baby Blue.
This song started me on the journey...
1970, 11.30 pm on 4ZA in Invercargill ... No artist announced so I didn't know what the band was.
Next morning I got on my bike and cycled down to the radio station and asked what album they had pleyed.
Already loved Night of Fear so knew I was on a winner.
But no record store (all 2 of them) had the LP and so 2 weeks later the only copy of Shazam ever delivered to Invercargill was mine.
At least that is what I believe.
And that, boys and girls, is how you wind up with thousands more LPs tham any person needs and hearing loss.

What those 4ZA programmers did for us? ...once bitten, never wavered...
