Hi Robin - the arm height adjustment is around 10mm (pretty much as indicated on the graduated post). I've never actually used this arm, but it appears that there is no reason why arm height cannot be adjusted whilst playing (as the low-geared movement is slow), however note that the big lever in front is for locking this geared arm pillar.

Progress has been slow as my engineer has been diverted by work & baby duties The Kenwood L-07D tonearm has been a PITA to accommodate - firstly an error in judgement on my part, the wood insert nuts do not work well in plywood, especially when close to cutout edges. T-nuts may have been a better option, but their diameter is too large also, for edge positioning. So, we had to devise & machine an alumin ring tapped to receive the 4 x M5 screws holding down the tonearm & cut a rebate around the L-07D hole to 'bury' the ring inside the plinth - the upside now is that this ring can receive hold-down screws for mounting plates for other tonearms.

Meanwhile the tonearm is well overdue for a general clean & a re-grease of the arm-lift worm-gears, etc.

Finally committed to ordering the 6mm thick, laser-cut Stainless Steel bottom plate for this plinth - they did a nice job. This 9kg plate provides (i) a low centre-of-gravity mass for the ply plinth (ii) the mass required for the Albert Porter-style 'noise sink' for the motor bearing.

Thanks, but no, I've seen more aesthetically impressive plinths I've adopted a slightly different concept - to the 'usual' solid, all-mass TT plinth. But "the proof of the pudding will be in the eating" - as they used to say. Or am I showing age again

what's the little circular piece on the rear edge of the motor cutout for ?

Post by Owen Y on Apr 12, 2019 16:43:55 GMT 12
what's the little circular piece on the rear edge of the motor cutout for ? That's an extra plywood tab, one of 2 extra scew fixings to give rotational rigidity to the SP-10. The high torque motor & its PLL speed control system, are constantly adjusting speed rotation & the SP-10 relies entirely on the friction grip between the underside of the alumin chassis frame & the (wood) plinth. This is because the screws used to hold the SP-10 down are long & also go through necessarily oversized holes in the plinth. So, it's a crude but effective (I think) solution to simply add some woodscrews through the SP-10 chassis (with countersunk head/holes to grip the SP-10 aluminium & naturally resrain lateral movement). (In practice, it's actually tricky to find places to put the screws )

Well spotted BTW Final check of SP-10-to-tonearm mounting distance, as the L-07D tonearm hole has no adjustment. Using a handy old Dennesen Soundtraktor alignment tool.

The plinth is big enough for a 2nd tonearm to be accommodated at the rear. 12" tonearms (like the Analog Instruments Apparition), need to be positioned at the LHS rear or RHS rear.

Sorry it's been a bit of a 'slow reveal' but solving the numerous issues as we go - DIY is always a learning curve. eg. I'd like to accommodate a linear tracker too, of course. Not immediately, but as long as it can be positioned on the plinth, there are options....

Easter Friday - home alone, made some good progress .... Finish-sanded the laminated plinth.

To the base of the plinth is affixed a 9kg, 6mm thickness, nicely laser-cut Stainless Steel plate. However, this needed holes countersunk, de-burring, cleaning & the centre-hole tapped for a M12 fine thread SS hex bolt, which will be screwed upward to contact the SP-10's main bearing. Finally, wet & dry sanded & washed....

It's alive, finally! First run in its new plinth.... After all the dissection (SP-10) & minor hurdles at every turn (mainly the Kenwood tone arm), the TT still runs, beautifully. Silently - except for slight PTX hum from the Power Unit. Locked on all speeds, love the near-instant stop-start.

Testing still to do... bearing Noise Sink not yet installed. Reso-mat coming from UK, mag-lev support feet not cosmetically complete. Transfiguration cart HF sounds very extended with the ‘Neumann 4th pole’ & all those exotic caps in the phono. You can hear the ‘air’ & detail in the video audio. But can’t match the London Decca in leading edge attack, image presence. Or bass. Bass nothing to get excited about yet.
