Hana Umami Red now here!
Those familiar with the sound of the Hana ML may have wondered how you would do much better but master designer Okada-san from Excel Sound, (makers of Hana cartridges) has lifted the bar considerably. The name Umami says a lot about this cartridge even before you consider the mix of technology and traditional skills that has gone into it. Umami is a statement of design intent. Full bodied flavour, rich, meaty are all adjectives you find when doing a search for the meaning of Umami. Unsurprisingly, these also can describe the sound of the Umami Red cartridge Drawing on 50 years of experience making cartridges sold under other brand names, Okada-san has added a check list of exotic parts and processes. A boron cantilever with nude microline stylus, cryogenically treated coil system of hand-wound high purity copper and a body of A7075 Duralumin & Ebony finished with multilayered Urushi laquer Even lower coil resistance and tighter tolerances improve output balance and frequency response. But like all good chefs it is the subtle mix of these ingredients that give the Umami flavour. How much better than a ML? enough that the differences are obvious within 10s. I'm reluctant to say more as I'm obviously biased. I will be touring the cartridge round the country after Christmas, so message me if you are interested in hearing it. But it could be a nice Christmas present for yourself! Audio Reference, Rapallo & Turned on Audio in Auckland and Relics in Dunedin are all stocking Hana cartridges (but you will have to ask about the Umami) For the technically minded, a table of Hana details and specs is here

Thanks Guys, Given the x9 price differential between the Hana EL and Umami, will have the ML as a x3 stepping stone. Given how good the ML is, the Unami is an surprisingly impressive step up again. That being said, the EL is pretty good in the system. At Rapallo, the rest of the gear choice will be up to Deano and co but I was very impressed by the Klipsch Heresy / Prima Luna last year when I did my demo to them. At Wellington Audio Club we will be using their Club amp and speakers (Thiel 1.2 ??) as I don't fancy bringing too many boxes up.

Hi. I would like to attend this event. Do we have to sign up or just turn up? Auckland evening. Thanks. I've not seen any restricted sign up advertised. I'd just turn up. As I hope to do too, work permitting. @deano may be able to shed some light on this but I imagine that that would be fine.

Yes, Deano will confirm but I am sure it is handy rather than necessary to have a sense if we are 3 or 30 people

They/ve been around for donkey years. Monthly meeting at Vic. If you are on the Facebooks they have an out of date page chronicling past meets.
