That settles it, Carl! ... From now on, you're getting only decaffeinated coffee!

Actually I find even freeze dried instant a poor substitute, although sometimes I've had some in the pantry as emergency if the real stuff has run out. (Right now there's a 1/2 jar of Robert Harris Italian Roast - left over from a 'wake' - and a gifted jar of Screaming Turtle Ignite in there.)
My daily espresso driver is an all stainless Breville something pump espresso machine, replaced a former one that had a bit more plastic trim which had died, I forget how now; in between I'd bid on TM for a $12 diminutive Sunbeam EM2800 ('seemed to not get as hot, maybe thermostat' - which turned out to be true) and a fully automatic programmable Kenwood ES630 for $1 (intermittent on-off switch - easily fixed) and to my surprise had won them both.
Telling this tale to a friend, he told me he'd just put the above stainless Breville out in his apartments inorganic pile - I went over to rescue it. Nothing wrong with it - he'd been gifted it, hardly used it, wanted to reclaim bench space. So within days I went from having none, getting the french press out of the cupboard, to having three.
Buying some Cafiza cleaning powder for the baskets cost more... I flushed out the tanks too with ... citric acid, I think. Yes all very frugal, nothing like the monsters up thread, same with choices of vacuum packed bricks usually on special. Although I do also have a hand cranked grinder and an electric one and sometimes buy beans.
Still, it's an espresso. I almost never buy milk;- I have it with cream, sugar optional, and always the double basket for one cup.
Cheers! ;=})

Nescafe not fancy enough for smoko ?
Environmentally friendly too, like class D amplifiers: You dont even need to boil a kettle, just mix in a cup with milk and water and pop it in the microwave for 30 sec...

Just create an overlay shelf suitable aesthetically for the 5cm or so deeper, and maybe the weight at the back will hold it down.
Or else use double sided sticky tape or foam strips.

I no longer have a microwave. At least I can judge the desired 93-96 sub 100C boiling temperature from the electric kettle noise!
