Yes I had thought that Tawa was the only NZ wood used at the time.

Belatedly had a look at the box the LP12 came in. On one side is stencilled Linn’s name and Glasgow address, and underneath is a printed sticker glued on, with Avalon’s name and Auckland address. On the lid is the remainder of a shipping label, the sender again being Avalon of Auckland, and addressed to Sound Expression Ltd, Courtney Place, Wellington.
On the other end of the box someone has written in marker pen, the serial number and the word “Tawa”.
So, it seems it is a nz assembled Plinth. The small notch to take a lid prop is an anomaly, as it was discontinued late 70s when the spring loaded lid was used. A careful look at the slot with a magnifying glass confirms it has never been used. The conclusion I draw is they must have had a stock of older plinths, or the maker of the plinths had not been informed of the change!

local linns had the notch well into 81/82, many with the old lid too.
i never bothered with the spring lid, preferring to completely remove the hinges and use the lid in a lift off fashion.

Finished setting things up. Initially set the tonearm with a more positive VTA than recommended by Linn, but as recommended by Ortofon. Sound was pretty ordinary. Today set the VTA as recommended by Linn, with arm parallel to the record while playing. The magic of the Black was back, but should improve with more hours of use. The TT is sitting on an old Target stand, which has lightweight shelves made of MDF and wrapped in black Vinyl. The bottom 4 shelves are occupied by amp, Bluray player, CD player and tape deck, so while the stand is lightweight, there is considerable mass added. However, the top shelf sits on isolating spikes, which can be adjusted for levelling. So fingers crossed that meets the Linn requirement of being set up on a light stand! There is no room for my PureAudio Vinyl Pre, and that sits on a small table beside the stand. Will have to make a small shelf for it one day. Just as well the spikes can be used for levelling, as being set up level is something Linn insists on. My 1m long carpenters level is too big for the job, and a search on line for a suitable spirit level brought up some ridiculous prices. Then I remembered a tool I had inherited from my late father in law back in the early 70s - see photo, and it is ideal for the job. I found the shelf was not very level, but it is now! The spirit level is 8.5 inches long.

Or download the Bubble spirit level app to your smartphone. Works pretty well.

Just ordered some Linn bearing oil from The Hifi Store, and found that the bearing fitted to this TT confirms it is circa 1984, not 82/83.

Linn graphite-loaded 'black oil'? Yep, the black stuff! Must be made out of unobtainium going by the price!

Yep ! another Linn rip off. It's just mineral oil with graphite or molybdenum Disulfide (moly)added to it. You've got to admire their brilliant marketing.
Yeah I know, I'm just a cynical old bugger !!

The Linn 'Black Oil' wasn't offered until around '87. As I recall, IMO at the time, it suited the LP12, the graphite-loaded oil added some 'weight' to the (band limited) LP12 sound.
