At least two I can think of.. the Audio Technica AT30/AT31, and the Satin M18E. Never heard the latter, but the AT30E is a solid performer

Interesting, but surely what is needed now are some really good budget priced cartridges. Grado used to do one that was really good value (under $100.00 iirc), way back when, but even their carts have got more expensive of late. Low output MM were also a thing back in the late 70's: My Technics EPC100cMK3 has a ridiculously low output and there was also a Stanton Model ( 880s ?), that was a low output MM. That was probably the Grado F3E+ which retailed around $49.00 and was an excellent performer for the price, or possibly the FTE+ a budget boomer..

deano1974 - what would be your favourite/s of the current crop of MM/MIs that you carry and/or are familiar with? eg How's the Goldring 2000 series or the AT VMs? Hi Owen havent heard many of the Goldrings apart from the 2300 which is pretty darn good for it's price The ATs are very very good especially the VM series the 760SLC tracks amazingly well with its special line contact stylus But I would have to say for me the Clearaudio MMs are excellent, I had the Artust V2 for a while and then had the chance to upgrade to the maestro and wow! The detail this cart can retrieve is easily superb and its a cartridge thats a seriously strong contender against any 3k+ MC But im biased, as I have always had a soft spot for MM Deano I am likely to be in the market for a MM cart soon. Am looking at (in descending pricing order); Ortofon 2M Black AT760SLC Clearaudio Artist V2 just looking for input to help me make up my mind!

^ haha
a word of warning for those contemplating buying ancient NOS cartridges or styli. often the stylus and cantilever will be fine but the suspension components can deteriorate even without use.
eg. a friend recently bought a nos replacement stylus that lasted about two records before the cantilever collapsed.

Sub, I will mention Garrott Brothers too as their MM range is well worth looking into. Local(ish), lots of options, repairable and a good upgrade ladder if you like the house sound.

Hi Dom,
Well thats topical as I just bought your LP for record store day off Grant Smithies here in Nelson and played it with my Garrott retipped Supex 900. Sounds great BTW, nice album.
Cheers

Lots of research, shortlist down to two -
Garrott P77i Ortofon 2M Bronze
Chose the Bronze over the Black, not just on cost difference, but two separate reviews claim the Bronze is easier to listen too long term over the more audiophile sounding Black.
The Garrott sounds interesting, is a bit cheaper than the Bronze. The major point of difference is that the Bronze has a 5mv output and the Garrott 4mv. Would that make much of a difference in sound? Given that I am seeking improved dynamics over the Denon DL 103R I am presently using.
Anyone used either of these cartridges?
Edit: can answer part of my own question re 4 v 5mV, found same discussion on other forums, and the consensus is the difference is virtually negligible!
still be nice to hear from anyone who has used, or heard, the above carts!

I'm still using a Garrott P77 that I bought off the Garrott brothers. Also have a Shure V15/3 with SAS stylus,a Technics EPC205/3 also with an SAS stylus,a Stanton 881s with a Jico Shibata stylus and a few others!!
My P77 also has a Jico SAS stylus fitted, after years of looking for a replacement stylus that didn't cost the earth.Wasn't going to pay AU$500 for one.The difference was better highs, bass, you name it compared to the original stylus, which I loved and wore out.
Picked up a Garrott K1 last year to try. With the SAS stylus in it,it was close to the P77 with SAS. I've also had a couple of Garrott Decca Gold Microscanners.Very nice but a bit stressful using them and I don't miss them.
The 205/3 is great, wee bit more detail than the P77 but the P77 is a bit louder and more musical and easier to listen to with all LP's,where the 205/3 can sound a bit fierce on very bright LP's. The V15/3 SAS is great too,but my favourite is still the P77.Not perfect but very musical to me. PS.I have a few relatives up your way,Fosters and Gartons.

The Garrott sounds interesting, don’t know if the 205/3 is available still. Big plus with the Ortofon is the body is threaded - no fiddly nuts. The on line picture of the Garrott carts look as if the bodies are not threaded. Know Neil Foster he has done some work for me with his digger. Top guy. The only Garton’s I met were in Whangarei. One was a registered valuer, and the other ran a bicycle shop. That was many years ago. Have seen a guy named Garton locally advertising himself as a fencer. Both big families I understand and have been in the area since early settler days.

The Garrotts aren't threaded. The Technics 205/3 is scarce, but I've not seen a Garrott P77 on TMe yet!The P77i is a later version, just a change in stylus I think. Yeah,my grandma was a Garton.Around Oruaiti. Don't know any of the younger ones up there now.I'm 67 so all the ones I know would be ancient now as well.

........... Not getting the load and capatence can hold back what MM carts are capable of And the whole 47k 100pf recommendations from most manufactures doesnt help esspecially as alot of MM cartridges available perform better on other settings but thats a whole different topic And I open a can of worms lol Deano @michaew, re the above quote, do some better quality MM only phono pre also have ability to fine tune capacitance and load? Will find out for sure about the PueAudio Vinyl when I reach GaryM next week.

PS. When Graham Slee talks about Magnetic Cartridges, he explains..... " the magnetic cartridge. Moving magnet, moving coil or moving iron; each one is magnetic and has one main common characteristic."

Quite a few high end phono units are very adjustable these days, load capacitance-wise? Or, is my memory failing me again?
