Although Fremer lives in New Jersey on the E Coast, he is an honoured member of the LA and Orange County Audio Society. Here, before receiving their 2018 Founder's Award, he is interviewed by the LAOCAS. As expected, pretty amusing biographical story-telling, especially his health circumstances under which he resigned from The Absolute Sound magazine and later joined Stereophile, where he's been senior contributing editor for the past 24 years.

And video below of the Dec 2018 presentation of the Founder's Award to Michael Fremer by John Atkinson (former Editor-in-Chief of Stereophile magazine) at the LAOCAS 25th Anniversary Gala. I must admit I respect Fremers knowledge and passion for vinyl however I’ve seem him completely spit the dummy at well respected reviewers like John Darko and there is a well documented bust up with Chris Connaker from Computer Audiophile. His views can be completely irrational when comparing digital to vinyl.

Cynthia, The AUDIO BELLE, interviews Michael Fremer at Rocky Mountain International Audio Fest 2019, last September: In Part 1, Fremer talks about his 16,000 record collection, selling a record that he wishes he hadn't, digital (PCM or DSD- which is best?), streaming, 180 gram vinyl, record clamps,...

In Part 2, Fremer discusses virgin vinyl vs re-ground vinyl, half-speed mastering, vinyl & CDs " are both imperfect", being invited to Abbey Road Studios to witness a Beatles Mono box-set re-mastering, 33rpm vs 45rpm, owning a Saab....

i'm no digital apologist but he's wrong about those early cd's,
many of them are now sort after for their sound quality compared to later pressings.
it was the early players (most using philips 14-bit chipsets) that were largely responsible for the bum sound.

It's confusing though: now the early CDs are sought after (on the contrary on the early days we use to blame them and replace them), also there is a debate about earlier technology DACs (non-oversamping) - I just bought one actually - personally I have difficulty hearing clear differences between digital sources (the way you do on analogue) but it might be just me.

Im not sure there is a definitive answer to this one. I remember when CD's first came out here and most people thought they were a total revelation, no surface noise, incredible dynamics etc. Then a bit later on CD became known as bright sounding and hard, but remember also the systems then that these players were used in context with. Then came the valve revival (yes I know ARC and CJ had been doing them for years but they werent very well known here early on), and lo and behold the CD came to life !
I think you can get very good sound from CD. Its interesting to note that early CDP are now quite collectable, players like the Marantz CD473 and CD94 being highly sought after.

Michael Fremer, marks his 300th STEREOPHILE Analog Corner column for Stereophile (14 Sep '20), takes a " look back, reflect, and consider the way forward". " Some who greet me at shows credit me with "saving vinyl," which is 100% not true, although I admit I played my part.
In the UK, at 2019's Ascot show, one couple credited me with saving their marriage. (Who am I to argue?) " (A young Michael Fremer outside the Royal Albert Hall in London - in the 80s?)

John Atkinson ( STEREOPHILE 15 Sept'20) chimes in, on the occasion of Michael Fremer's Analog Corner #302 column, with a brief bio including how Fremer came to join Stereophile after leaving The Absolute Sound. He has this to say about Michael's system: " I regularly visit Michael...I always listen to LPs on Michael's current system. When I do, I am reminded of why we all love this hobby: It's about letting the music overwhelm us, as it always does me at Michael's place. " (John Atkinson presenting Michael Fremer with the Los Angeles & Orange County Audio Society's 2018 Founder's Award.)
