Is there an ikea or other equivalent for storage of tapes like the the Kallax for vinyl? I don't know, although looking up Ikea Kallax I realised that I'd built a better customised wall hanging shelf unit, deliberately 5' x 4', not metric, painted white (5-7 coats) against a white wall, with adjustable shelves matching CDs DVDs and books.
But back in the '90's, I bought available plastic drawer units for tapes, CDs and VHS tapes, and adjusted shelves in my also self built black unit to fit. Not sure what's available now. Like this:
Tape storage on TM?

Looking for something more like this. Off the shelf, in NZ. Can only find ones overseas and postage is horrendous.

Best local bet is probably the same opshops you scored your tapes from.

I doubt that, else they'd already be there, but ok yeah you never know.
This guy on TM has ridiculous prices for pieces of plastic, especially since he's selling antique furniture at the same price!
Then for weird but colorful rotating ones ...
So uglgly aargh!@ But maybe vintage fun for some.
I'd get some built out of wood.

It's an interesting image, where did you get it from?
Are they trying to create a lens distortion effect? It looks like slightly shoddy construction to me. Although it's sort of parabolic. ;=})
I have saved lots of thin wood material, slats, sheets, of real wood and plywood, for various purposes - divisions in drawers to custom shelving units.
But all that is in abeyance for the moment. My table saw is in storage. But maybe other people would be up to creating a simple cassette shelf system?

Probably lens distortion. Generic google pic. But this is generally the sort of thing I'm after, wooden, display, holds about 100. It seems more likely to find a shelf system for CDs, but that would mean wasted/extra depth and height to each shelf.

wonky build my tapes are stored in these units from the 80s

Yeah ta I reckon wonky build as well, well beyond lens distortion which would be much smoother!
Hey nice shelves - simple enough to construct - yet then two choices: Display vertically or horizontally.

OMG!!! I'm so jealous. That's just what I want. As just earlier - you could go horizontal or vertical display, although immediately I realise I'm wrong - horizontal is fine in drawers, but vertical better in vertical shelves. Yet that pic showed what was needed for horizontal display. Lots of thin lightweight shelves - but machined more accurately than that! So it could work. Else vertical.
So think how many tapes you might like to accommodate, sketch dimensions, how many shelves what thickness and then a frame, do homework, approach a [missing word].

I hate you!
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times;- don't exaggerate!" ;=})
"The opposite of love is not hate;- it's indifference."
Patient window shopping might get you to where you want or need to be? I mean re cassette shelving. Have you got enough wall space to hang frames like that? (I don't;- I've run out of room beyond the odd space for a picture pictures or mirror. Hence drawers.)
Anyway a capable person could run up shelves and a frame and cut slots to fit the shelves into verticals, if given dimension requirements.
Create your own! ;=}) Or get your design created.
Sketch things out a little bit at least to begin with is my suggestion.
Cheers!

In my experience, anything custom made is at least twice the price of something off the shelf.
So will keep looking. Not in any hurry and doesn't have to be flash, just functional.
A 5 by 20 shelf isn't very large so fits easily. Only about 60*50cm

Hmm all fair enough. So 100 tapes, 5 shelves high x 20 tapes wide, tapes displayed vertically. Maybe a center vertical for strength so 10 + 10 cassettes sideways. Slotted wood frame receiving shelves.
Off the shelf, custom made, I don't know, but keep an open mind perhaps. Detail down on what might be ideal.
Then there will be engineering concerns like how thin can the shelves be and not sag, being stiff enough, and what sort of plywood or hard board or real wood to make them with.
And what aesthetic choices for the outer frame timber. Which is accepting the inbuilt slotted shelves. What could it all look like? What would you like it to look like? And so on

Those look decent but like LPs, cassettes are best stored vertically so the tape isn't resting on it's edge.

Ah that's an interesting point. And the inserted vertically in drawers is the same. Ta.

Ha ha ok yes right, but perhaps one could just rotate them 90° and mount that way? However they are intended to be mounted. 19" wide at base with whatever height could look good?

These were the first that I saw. Only thing is that the outer frame looks puny/fragile/weak compared to most of the other options.

THat's OK;- Like gravity sagging loudspeaker voice coils, just turn them 180° and wait another 30 years? ;=})
Some slight controversy. Maybe cassette tapes are so light that it won't affect them too much? One can wind, rewind? I see some folk just wind? I've often wound-rewound to get an even pack, but at full speed. I was astonished to see some folk advising at playing speed? Maybe a joke;-
My first two hits on this search are from tapeheads.net (from where I stole the above pic) and audiokarma.org - I read both.
Next reddit.com, not yet read. Just in case your results are different!

I've always stored my tape media vertically and tails out... played. Fast winding with even the best machines can produce uneven tension on the tape. I never rewinded rental VHS tape either

Yeah, when I worked at the 16mm film and VHS school library service we required the former to be left unwound so that we could inspect them on fast hi-tech machines to detect flaws, stop instantly on detection. Not sure why the latter now, maybe just client convenience.
Interesting note re fast winding (& re-winding). I used it if I'd started & stopped a cassette multiple times on a side, before repacking it in its case, thinking to obtain an even pack.

I like this comment from tapeheads.com
"If it were me, I would save myself some stress and worry about something else" 😁
Besides, the titles are so much easier to read horizontally.
