Just back from an early morning blat around Dairy Flat, Peak Rd and Old North Rd: "The car is highly specified, with exclusive parts and exclusivity on its side (only 30 made it to Australia), but a $49,990 price makes it $500 more expensive than the top-of-the-range MX-5 RF GT with an auto gearbox" How many made it to NZ? I believe there was a total 17 .... 13 RF and 4 roadster (soft top). And not Persimmon ... Mazda calls it Racing Orange.

I do miss the Alfasud. It’s atmo 1.5L flat 4 was free revving and zingy, with a light flywheel so it had next to no lag. It made changing gears so fast and had lemon-sharp throttle response when you need it. Not much power though, but still fun to drive under the speed limit! Mine was the same as this I owned an Alfasud once (a bit like the one below), 1300cc, 1976/78? The most forgiving & balanced car I've ever owned -you didn't have to think too hard when entering a corner, you just went in & drove it out, on the throttle

Playfulness and adjustability are two qualities missing from most modern cars.
I've recently driven three of the best new hot hatches - Toyota GR Yaris, MY21 Honda Civic Type R and the Ford Focus ST.
Surprisingly the slowest car was the most fun to drive.
For those complaining about lack of poke in their MX5...

Wheeler Dealers refurbished one on Choice TVlast night.
From the thousands sold in the UK, only 50 remain on the road.

I tried to recapture my youth by later getting one of these.... but the only thing remotely similar was the bonnet badge (Even the later 1500cc Alfasuds, somehow had lost the handling magic of those early 1200s (the best revving over-square boxer engine) & 1300s.)

Nice, I had a ‘bread van’ 145 as well, very lively but the engine felt a bit strangled by the emissions equipment. The Alfa 33 was fun but felt front-heavy with crashy front suspension, and some torque steer, which I didn’t mind. You could still feel what the front wheels were doing. The 146 with the in-line 4 had more power but less exciting to drive by comparison. So the hunt was on for something more modern with a little more character than average, but not a bonkers racing car.....I got a Subaru Forester.

The Forester is hugely underrated ! A friend had a 2004 Forester STI and it was the near perfect car ! Boxy carrier of boxy things and speedy road racer (as quick as the equivalent STI sedan) in the one package. Shame on Subaru for not continuing the STI variant.

A great machine..You could drive it straight from the showroom up a sand dune and leave highly modified 4wds in its wake!

I much prefer permanent AWD like Subarus to the modern part-time systems, While Haldex etc have improved in responsiveness they are still are still a bit second rate.
