Has anyone else snuck a peek at Nagra’s first (mega-bucks) turntable link? I thought the Swiss watch “homage” was particularly natty. I’m sure the aesthetics will still polarise opinion, but I’ll go on record to say I would happily accommodate one, given the opportunity! 😵💫 🥳

Looks too plain, uninspiring, neutral to me!
For EUR170,000 I'd want more style, even if controversial.

After deciding to keep both turntables I needed a new rack, just got it all together last night. Nice work, looks great. Are they those bamboo laminate panels I've seen at Bunnings etc?

Thanks Jeremy, yes they are. First time working with bamboo and easier to work with than expected.

Hi, Harvey;- beautiful work!
Thanks for showing it. Really inspiring to see.
However ... did you seal these in any way, I don't know, lacquer, polyurethane, wax, etc?
When I repurposed an even slightly longer real wood veneered mdf cabinet cupboard and shelves, I found that it would bow under the weight - of equipment, & etc. (I'm not talking about my shorter industrial black lounge one! - this is in another room with wood veneer I haven't yet identified.) I strengthened the top shelf with a double layer of solid wood, for contrast a middle shelf with ali angle on front & back edges.
(Overflow LPs on the bottom shelf had the kickback recess under that shelf, supporting it.)
So my first brief thought is ... with moisture in the air, humidity, etc. - what's the long term prospect for exposed bamboo, if unsealed?
And second, have you given thought to reinforcing the shelves, particularly the top one, before they start to irresistibly slowly bow under the weight?
Perhaps some black painted square section steel lengths, recessed enough - inside of corner blocks? - to be relatively hidden? As thick as shelves?
Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe the bamboo shelves will stay straight, but I have seen wood shelves slowly bend before ... and moisture ingress would worsen.
Please forgive my imaginations! ;=})

Thanks rdm, just finished off with a couple of coats of Danish oil.
I did think about a central support. Most but not all double width racks seem to have one (some just one at the back) which would suggest they are not mandatory but dependant on design and material etc. I'm hoping 25mm Bamboo laminate will have enough structural integrity, but will be keeping an eye on it.

Ok, so the top shelf is starting to sag a little in the middle. Mostly at the front so I'm wondering if it wasn't a little out of shape to start with. It was only sagging about 3mm but has bounced back a little with the weight of the turntables removed (the SP10 is quite weighty).
I could build legs for the middle of course but I really like look of the rack as it is so would like to avoid this if possible. Building a middle leg just for the back might be the way to go but it could still sag at the front over time I guess.
Another option could be reinforcing the shelf with a length of angle steel. The plan would be to have two lengths of 25 x 3mm welded together to form a T shape then screw (and glue?) it to the shelf underneath in the middle, finishing just short of the sides so it is not visible.
Not ideal but would this work ok or would a double thickness shelf look alright? Any feedback welcome.

2 angle brackets front and back under top shelf. Leaves the middle between shelves clear.

Whether it's square section steel, or L brackets, somehow recessed from the front so less visible, maybe behind or butting up to or behind the pillars, it will need something. Imagine steel plate. How do you support the wood so that it doesn't sag, with weight, humidity, & etc. And so that it still looks good. As imagined, but maybe altered to suit.

Decided to go with option c, glued and screwed in place. Not the best look but they can't be seen from a sitting position.

Decided to temporarily mount a second Dyn 505 arm to my Merrill. Although its not designed to mount an extra arm, I used the arm board from my Aura and secured it via an extra long M8 bolt through the same fixing that is meant to secure the feet. Might investigate an arm pod so that the arm can be positioned at the left rear hand of the table, instead of sticking out the front.

Thought you only had one DV arm ? Cueing must be tricky
|
Post by Citroen on Dec 20, 2021 16:07:17 GMT 12
No, I bought a second one about 3 years ago, as I think its a great arm for sub $1500. Yes, cueing is tricky unless you are lefthanded. That's why I want to mount it on an armpod at the lefthand rear. I could utilise the fixing for the front right hand footer, so that the arm is at the right front of the turntable but that gets messy with arm and tonearm cables sticking out, and the distance from the Tt looks like it would be more suitable for a 12 inch arm...now there's a thought...

The DV505 has a detachable headshell, so I really have no idea why I would mount two of them on the same turntable!
I guess it saves changing arm height and down force settings...
